When Sephora partnered with Kat Von D to launch her beauty line, the pressure was high. Kat’s public persona was already a fully formed brand: unapologetically bold, gothic, and iconic. That made the design challenge binary. It would either be exactly right or completely wrong.

We were brought on to design the brand’s very first compact: the Lock-It Blotting Powder case. Rather than inventing a new aesthetic, we immersed ourselves in Kat’s world to extract and amplify what already existed. Through deep research, mood boards, and early sketches, we identified a symbol that felt both intimate and authoritative: the wax seal. It became the core of our design direction, capturing the raw, personal essence of Kat’s brand.

From there, we led the full product development cycle including 3D modeling, prototyping, design refinement, and manufacturing coordination. The result is a product that is as instantly recognizable as the artist behind it. The Lock-It Blotting Powder is now sold in Sephora stores around the world and continues to stand as a benchmark of beauty branding done right.
